Meet the Team: Bill Lutton

Back To Resources

We thought it would be interesting to run some blogs about the super people at Cloudhouse. We’re speaking to people across all our teams to find out a bit more about them, what their role is and what makes them tick. We also ask them to spill the beans on their worst IT fail… because it happens to the best of us!

Meet… Bill Lutton, Engineering

Bill Lutton, Engineering

When did you join Cloudhouse?

December 2020. Although I’m relatively new to Cloudhouse and I haven’t had many opportunities to be with the team in person, I did manage to travel over to London for the Christmas 2021 get-together. I spent a few days doing the tourist things too – a little tour bus around the landmarks, a trip on the London Eye, buying a cap with the Tube logo!

Tell us a little about your career up to this point:

The grey beard represents 40 years of work in the field. Back then we wrote on clay tablets… I had a long career with Hewlett Packard, about 19 years, and worked primarily in firmware. I worked on instruments like spectrum analysers, building the software that went into them. Then I got working with a series of start-ups as a contractor. I ran a small business with my business partner and one of our clients was an early Webex company, developing computer-based conferencing. Following that we developed our own start-up on an antivirus program. The program looked for anything that tried to execute and, if it wasn’t preapproved, would block it. Out of that we developed a driver that notified us of any file accesses or execution requests made on a system. That went on to become what is now the real-time file change notification feature of Cloudhouse Guardian. So that’s the thread from 15 years ago that links my past working life with Cloudhouse!

What do you do at Cloudhouse?

I work on the Cloudhouse Guardian service. My job is primarily to work on the code for the data acquirers, what I like to call the data acquisition minions, that collect data from the target nodes and send it back to the server.

What’s the best thing about working at Cloudhouse?

One of the things I really like is that they have great commitment to a ‘high touch’ kind of approach to their customers. A key part of the business is building a peer relationship with customers and engaging them on the leading end of ideas and product direction, and maintaining that, taking it back into the product cycle. Cloudhouse looks to build relationships over a longer time scale, more than just the next quarter. I really appreciate working in that kind of environment.

Most embarrassing IT moment (e.g., hitting reply all when you really shouldn’t have, deleting something VERY important, leaving your laptop on the train…)

I fancy myself an electronics geek as well as a software geek. My personal laptop screen failed, so I thought “I’m an electrical engineer, I can fix this. I’ve seen a Dell technician do it in 15 minutes.” Over the course of six months, I ended up with a laptop that was completely non-functional and in a dozen pieces. I could not get the screen replaced. To this day is stands as testament to overconfidence…

Favourite sandwich filling?

I don’t know if it counts as a sandwich, but I’d choose a Monte Cristo. It’s a little like a club sandwich, with layers of ham and turkey and something else – and the kicker is it’s dipped in batter and then deep fried. You eat it with a knife and fork with raspberry jelly and mayonnaise.

How do you take your tea?

I start my day with English breakfast tea, one spoon of sugar and no milk. I prefer it stronger, so I always put two tea bags in and leave them for four or five minutes or so.

Cats or dogs?

Me: dog, wife: cat. We have had both for 30-odd years we’ve been married.

Dream holiday destination:

On my bucket list is someplace in the islands of Greece, a little mountainous village with white-washed buildings and a sparkling beach down below. That’s where I want to go next.

Adem Ali

Senior Software Engineer within the DC team

When did you join Cloudhouse?

July 2019

Tell us a little about your career up to this point:

After I graduated, I spent around nine years working for Sky as a Principle Software Engineer. I then took a year out doing something completely different, running my own recording studio in East London. I set up the studio myself and had all the equipment and would do all the mixing and mastering. But it wasn’t as fun and glamourous as it sounds! So, I came back to the other love of my life, which is coding, and joined Cloudhouse. I still have all the studio equipment, though, and I perform in a few bands – my main instruments are piano and guitar, but I do a little bit of everything. I have a saxophone I want to get better at playing, and I also love the ukulele.

What do you do at Cloudhouse?

My role is centred on deployment and compatibility. The main project we have at the moment is a new approach to how we virtualise software. It will allow the team more flexibility and enhance the customisability of what’s possible with virtualisation. I really love working on this project. My favourite thing to do in the world is learning, and this role is 60% learning and 40% application of things I am already confident in. That’s what gets me up in the morning: there is so much stuff to learn and at Cloudhouse I have the opportunity to go ahead and run with it.

What’s the best thing about working at Cloudhouse?

There’s a lot of autonomy, Cloudhouse excels at that. And the people are great: lovely to work with, super knowledgeable, super friendly and super sociable! Which is a great combination. It gives you an opportunity to melt the stiff barriers between colleagues and the work becomes much more collaborative.

Most embarrassing IT moment (e.g., hitting reply all when you really shouldn’t have, deleting something VERY important, leaving your laptop on the train…)

I think the biggest faux pas for me is something that I consistently do: I always forget my password for logging on. It happens a lot! All I need is a Bank Holiday weekend and I’ve forgotten it, and I need someone to reset it. I use software to manage my passwords, but the problem is that it lives on my laptop, which I need a password to access…

Favourite sandwich filling:

Anything with olives, I like olives!

How do you take your tea?

As strong as possible, and no milk. And not too hot.

Cats or dogs?

Well, I have two kittens, so I have to choose cats! They are sisters, Mocha and Chino, about 9 months old now.

Mocha (l) and Chino (r)

Dream holiday destination:

Hawaii, I think. I like anything with sun, sand, and tropical nature. And I can take my ukulele with me and learn some traditional Hawaiian songs!

Facing a tough decision with your Windows applications? We can help

Back To Resources

Why a tough decision can sometimes mean no decision at all

Sometimes, it can be difficult to see the best way forward. When it comes to the ongoing maintenance of business critical software applications, you can find yourself trapped when older applications become incompatible with newer versions of Windows.

It can feel as if you have only two options: attempt to refactor or replace the application (with the cost, downtime and potential for disruption that this will entail) or keep an older version of Windows running and live with the security issues (any recent headline on ransomware attacks will show where this can lead).

Both paths look unattractive. So, if someone offers a third option – ‘Let’s leave this for now and revisit in the future’ – it’s understandable that many choose that route instead.

We’re only human!

It turns out that this is a perfectly normal human response to a difficult situation. You may have heard of the term “decision paralysis” – it basically means that if we are faced with a difficult choice between action A or B, we instead choose action C, which might be to do nothing at all.

Added to this, our decision-making is also influenced by those around us. For example, a study into gambling behaviour found that when making decisions between safe (lower payoff but more probable) and risky (a higher payoff but less probable) options, people were more likely to make a choice if they had seen others make the same choice. So if we see others delaying making a decision, we are more likely to do the same.

Research has even found that people are willing to put themselves in an objectively worse position in order not to have to make the choice and commit to a path of action. They may even prefer getting worse news that will ‘force their hand’ into a decision (in this case perhaps a malware attack or a system failure?) rather than take a difficult decision pre-emptively to head off this possibility.

The problem of course is that while the decision is paused, the problem itself doesn’t remain static: systems become less compliant and may eventually be unsupported, security risks grow and the refactor option becomes a bigger job.

Take the first step

If this is the situation you find yourself in, Cloudhouse can help. Our solutions allow you to ‘wrap’ non-compliant or incompatible software and run it on the latest version of Windows, meaning you are secure and compliant, without the need to refactor or recode. It’s a real weight off your shoulders.

Why not take the lead and contact us for a free, no obligation chat? We offer a 100% Promise to all new clients who purchase a license agreement with us: you will be able to run your older apps on the latest version of Windows, or your money back.

Using CIS Benchmarks in Cloudhouse Guardian

Back To Resources

What is Cloudhouse Guardian?

Cloudhouse Guardian is designed to help you keep on top of monitoring your IT infrastructure and ensuring everything is compliant. It allows you to track and discover changes and ensure your estate complies with policies.

It does this by scanning the entire estate – servers, desktops, laptops, boundary devices, network infrastructure, storage and cloud platforms – and detecting and tracking the configuration of each component.

This data provides a single pane of glass through which you can see accurate configuration data across the whole of IT, from endpoints, servers, network and cloud to logical items such as security groups and AWS S3 buckets.

Cloudhouse Guardian identifies if systems are configured correctly, and when a change has taken a system out of compliance with your policies. With this valuable insight, you can manage configuration drift, for example ensuring that your DR site stays consistent with your production configuration.

CIS Benchmarks

And that’s not all: with Guardian scanning in place, it is simple to add industry standard CIS Benchmark scanning, ensuring your estate is compliant with best practice for secure configuration.

The Centre for Internet Security provides a fantastic range of best-in-class benchmarks or configuration guidelines for IT components. These benchmarks provide detailed guidance to safeguard your systems against cyber threats – you can read more about them here: https://www.cisecurity.org/cis-benchmarks/

Cloudhouse Guardian Benchmark scanning allows you to scan elements of your estate against these Benchmarks.

How to implement Benchmark scanning

Withing Cloudhouse Guardian, you can access Benchmarks on the left of the screen here:

You can then attach a Benchmark policy to a Node Group, for example a group of Active Directory Servers, and Guardian will scan the nodes for compliance with the Benchmark.

Guardian ships with a lot of CIS Benchmarks out of the box, covering many different types of devices:

The CIS Benchmarks include a lot of recommended changes to improve security (also known as “hardening”), so please be aware that if you have not already hardened your servers and are running in a default configuration, you can expect to see a LOT of red in the report!

This image shows output from a Guardian CIS Benchmark Report:

When you drill down further into a report, the results include details of all benchmark tests and recommendations on how to remedy any issues identified:

The CIS Benchmarks tool is a fantastic way to apply industry best practice to your environment, and this functionality is included free for all Guardian users.

If you are already using Guardian, but haven’t yet explored the Benchmark tool, why not check it out and see what you find? Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or want to discuss how to get the most value from this capability.

And if you are not a Guardian subscriber but would like to find out more about how it can help to ensure your organisation remains compliant and secure, contact us for a no-obligation chat. You can also learn more about Cloudhouse Guardian on our website here: Cloudhouse Guardian.

Festive greetings from us all at Cloudhouse

Back To Resources

We were lucky enough to gather together for our Christmas celebration earlier in December, before the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. It was wonderful to be together and to be joined by some of our US colleagues for the first time, after a year that was anything but ‘business as usual’.

We began with some board games that everyone could get involved in – Don’t Get Got was great fun!

Secret Santa was also very successful, although not everyone stuck to the sensible suggestions, naming no names…

Cloudhouse Santa keeping guard over the gifts!

We then headed off for the main event, a delicious meal at Christopher’s in Covent Garden. Along with some heartfelt speeches and thank yous, there was also time for dancing and a singalong!

The Cloudhouse office will be closed from Friday 24th December until Tuesday 4th January, when we return to normal working hours.

May we take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and good health for the New Year.

We will of course be here for emergency support if needed across the Christmas period, please contact us in the usual way.

Keeping older Microsoft IIS applications running

Back To Resources

Keeping older Microsoft IIS applications running

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is one of the most popular web servers in the world. With an estimated market share of more than 30%, it’s the third most used web server in the world, behind Apache and nginx.

Many organisations have older web applications that depend on IIS. If yours is one of them, read on to find out how Cloudhouse can provide a simple way to keep applications running exactly like before, but with all the benefits of a modern operating system.

A long history

IIS was first released as a free add-on for Windows NT in 1995, and since that time has been continually enhanced and improved with regular updates. IIS 3.0 introduced the Active Server Pages (ASP) dynamic scripting environment. The latest release is Version 10.0, which is included as part of Windows Server 2019.

Over its long history, IIS has become a core component of application development on Windows. It’s used to host websites and web applications and is a key solution for hosting .Net web applications.

Security and compatibility challenges

This success has, not surprisingly, made IIS a target for bad actors: since 1999 more than 80 security vulnerabilities have been found and patched.

But regular updates and patches can also introduce compatibility challenges. Older ASP or ASP.NET applications can depend on components which are no longer supported on current versions of Windows. Many organisations find themselves with web applications which can no longer be run on modern versions of Windows Server, forcing them to retain older Operating Systems to host older websites.

These older operating systems in turn can introduce security vulnerabilities, and when the operating system reaches the end of its life cycle and it no longer supported, these vulnerabilities cannot be patched.

A difficult position

When an application forces a company to use an older version of a server, this generates a very difficult position – the choice between running older systems with unpatched vulnerabilities and accepting the risk of potential malware and ransomware attacks, or taking the costly decision to redevelop their applications from scratch to be compatible with a modern Windows versions.

But there is a third option. Cloudhouse Alchemy allows you to package up older applications so they will run on the latest versions of IIS, exactly like before – but with all the benefits of a modern operating system.

Proven track record

As an example, many applications depend on ASP.NET1.1, which is no longer supported on Windows Server 2016. The Cloudhouse Alchemy tool allows you to move your application onto the latest operating system with no need for code changes or user retraining. It’s just like magic!

Cloudhouse can package up older web applications to ensure they run successfully on newer versions of IIS. We can take applications from IIS 6.0 (Windows 2003) or later and provide compatibility enabling them to run on any modern version of IIS. We do this using templates that leverage internal IIS tools such as Web Deploy for exporting and restoring websites and settings. Our redirection engine allows us to match deprecated features of older IIS versions with the equivalent features on modern versions, providing complete compatibility with no need to redevelop the application.

We have delivered hundreds of IIS migrations like this, helping clients get up to date quickly, and removing the worry of incompatibility and malware attacks.

Take the next step

Want to find out more? Just contact us for a no-obligation chat. We offer a 100% promise to all new clients who purchase a license agreement with us: you will be able to run your older Windows app on the latest version of Windows or your money back.

How Cloudhouse can help with DOS migration and customisation

Back To Resources

DOS: the precursor of all modern operating systems

It’s amazing that even though the final official version of DOS was released in the year 2000, DOS can still be found quietly working away behind business critical applications in companies and public sector organisations.  Read on to find out how Cloudhouse can help you with migration and customisation.

What is DOS?

DOS stands for Disk Operating System. Version 1.0 of PC-DOS was released with the first PC back in August 1981. It revolutionised computing. DOS is the precursor of all modern Windows operating systems: it’s a single tasking, single user, non-graphical operating system.

Companies created many applications in DOS running important internal processes.

Between 1981 and 1995, all DOS applications were 16-bit: designed to run on 16-bit microprocessors. Some of the popular frameworks from this era include Turbo C/C++, dBase, QuickBasic, Symantec Q&A and Microsoft Visual Basic 1, 2 and 3 to name just a few.

These days, with 64-bit CPUs being the norm in the mainstream personal computer market, this causes issues for old DOS software. The 16-bit CPU instructions required to run 16-bit applications are not accessible from 64-bit Windows. In fact some 16-bit applications fail to run even on 32-bit versions of Windows.

Difficult choices

Companies who still rely on DOS applications are faced with difficult choices when it comes to upgrading their systems.

In most cases with commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) solutions, these will no longer have vendor support, and in many cases the vendor may no longer exist, meaning there are no straightforward upgrade paths for organisations to take.

On top of this, the in-house developed applications from this era are often highly complex, and very difficult to re-factor into modern frameworks – and that’s even when you have the source code. If the source code is lost, it’s even more difficult.

Here at Cloudhouse we have also found that many applications of this era used ingenious hacks and undocumented APIs to achieve results – but these can cause unexpected problems or reliability issues when using existing publicly available solutions.

Cloudhouse can help: our team has MS DOS experience, and we can support you with migration and customisation. This knowledge can be hard to come by these days, but we have worked successfully with clients who have tried and failed to update their system before.

Success stories

Symantec Q&A Database

We successfully migrated a Symantec Q&A Database system with hundreds of complex batch files and macros to run on Windows 10 x64 / Server 2016. Our approach meant the existing batch files and macros could generally be used “as is” without modification. We also optimised a 16-bit CPU emulation layer to get the required performance on the client’s hardware.

Telecommunications software

We worked with a company using an MS-DOS application for interfacing with 1980s telecommunications billing hardware over a serial port. This was successfully migrated to work with Windows 10 x64 and now uses a USB serial port.

How Cloudhouse works with Sage

Back To Resources

In this blog we take a look at Sage, one of the best-known software names on the planet. If your organisation uses Sage software, read on to find out how our compatibility packaging Alchemy allows older applications to run with no need for upgrade, replacement, or retraining.

Founded in 1981, Newcastle upon Tyne-based powerhouse Sage is a global leader in financial and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, with offices in 24 countries. It’s estimated that Sage software is used by more than six million customers. After Oracle and SAP, Sage is the world’s third-largest supplier of ERP software.

It’s a household name for many, not least because the company is also the patron of the Sage Gateshead music venue in Tyne and Wear!

The company is particularly well known for two products: Sage Accounting and Sage Payroll. These are critical components for many businesses, performing all key financial functions including invoicing, payroll, and sales. They’re used by businesses of all sizes, from start-ups to multinationals.

As a long-established supplier, some customers have been using Sage software for many years. It’s a trusted and respected brand with significant levels of loyalty, not least because it offers tailored solutions allowing it to be carefully customised for a client’s individual requirements.

Falling behind on upgrades

Long-standing Sage customers have a system that is working well and carefully tuned to their needs, but upgrades can cause headaches. The computer system requirements needed to install and use Sage X3 have changed over time – for example, version 8 was the last which fully supported Windows 2008.

Completing an upgrade may require complex reimplementation of tailored services, which is not only time-consuming but can feel like a risk for clients: what if this doesn’t go to plan? What if we are left without the functionality we had – at least in the short term? The alternative, installing new software, will not only incur up-front costs but may also mean that additional time must be spent retraining staff.

Understandably, some customers fall behind on upgrades and updates. Eventually, this can mean that, although the software itself is still perfectly functional for their needs, an older operating system may be required to support it. This can force a company to keep a legacy operating system simply to continue using their core business applications.

As time goes by, these older operating systems receive fewer security patches and ultimately may stop being supported at all, leaving customers facing compliance and security risks.

We can help

If this is the situation facing your company, Cloudhouse can help. Our compatibility packaging, Alchemy, allows you to retain your current version of Sage software exactly as it is, with no need for upgrade, replacement, or retraining.

Alchemy provides compatibility for older applications that have become incompatible with current operating systems. Alchemy provides complete compatibility so your older application runs with no changes on any modern OS version, minimising security and compliance risk, while protecting business-critical software.

We have worked with several happy Sage customers and successfully packaged multiple versions of Sage software to allow it to run effectively on the latest versions of Windows. Contact us to find out more and for a no-obligation conversation. And don’t forget, we offer a 100% Promise to all new clients who purchase a license agreement with us: you will be able to run your legacy Windows app on the latest version of Windows or your money back.

The impact of not modernising legacy apps on the public sector: The views of our Vice President of Global Sales

Back To Resources

Cloudhouse’s Joe Ghattas discusses the challenges of not modernising from the perspective of public sector organisations

The continued pressure and lack of resources in place for public sector bodies have meant that many have avoided the time, risk, and resources that come with transformation and have instead chosen the perceived safety of the status quo, particularly in the context of application modernisation. The issue however is that the combination of tight budgets, external factors such as the pandemic, and the pace of technological change has placed pressure on legacy systems.

These systems can commonly be responsible for critical public services such as pensions, benefits, and healthcare, meaning any downtime can be potentially detrimental. In addition, Microsoft Extended Security Updates (ESUs) are creating a unique set of challenges for the sector.

The ESU Trap

To keep pace with change, public sector organisations need to look to new operating systems to support their operations. However, the cost of rehosting, rewriting, replacing, or refactoring applications for new systems are extensive, keeping to the current setup and moving on to ESUs is becoming a common strategy in both the public and private sectors.  Previously covered by our Founder and CEO Mat Clothier in his previous blog, shifting to ESUs is an expensive venture, with rising costs year on year for those that don’t or can’t look for an alternative. For public sector bodies that might be running on a shoestring budget to provide many critical services, it’s a cost that they understandably want to avoid.

Additional Challenges

It’s not just the problems posed by ESUs however that make it critical for public sector organisations to act. There is also a range of additional hurdles, broken down into five additional categories:

  1. The need to maintain compliance with audits and regulations such as GDPR, with UK public sector bodies the main target of data breaches in the eight years preceding 2019
  2. Protection against evolving threats such as ransomware to ensure security posture
  3. Supporting evolving remote working requirements during the Covid-19 pandemic, with almost all 50 of the UK’s biggest employers saying that they do not plan to bring staff back to the office full-time
  4. The hurdles to achieving cloud migration, with businesses looking to these solutions for increased resilience and agility
  5. The combination of a rapidly diminishing talent pool for managing legacy applications, combined with outdated code and costly hardware is creating challenges in managing in-house legacy systems

It’s the combination of ESUs and these other challenges that make it critical for public sector organisations to modernise their applications for use on an updated operating system. Failing to do so can have a significant impact in terms of employee efficiency and the ability to serve the public quickly. App incompatibility can also lead to costly downtime with additional costs incurred to then get the app up and running. With operating systems and server editions also running on a finite lifecycle, organisations that fail to modernise their systems can be left behind as new editions are introduced.

The good news is that investment in legacy modernisation is growing, with the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) in the US providing an innovative funding vehicle to allow agencies to deliver public services more quickly, secure sensitive data, and use tax income more efficiently. Alongside this, the UK Government has published the Technology Code of Practice to help the government design, build and buy technology.

Cloudhouse’s Application Compatibility Packaging

With investment in public sector operations growing, organisations need to utilise available funds to invest wisely in new solutions to enable a move away from the growing cost of ESUs and avoid the other evolving risks in the industry. Cloudhouse specialises in enabling legacy critical applications to be preserved and shifted to a newer operating system via the use of our Application Compatibility Packaging solution, otherwise known as Cloudhouse Alchemy.

After lifting has taken place, the apps can then be optimised to work as normal on either an on-premise or cloud system. Think of it as cutting and pasting an application from the legacy system into the new environment, with the app continuing to run exactly as expected once implementation is complete.

For numerous years, the public sector has been forced to play catch-up with innovation, with envious glances in the direction of the private sector as many enterprises have moved forward with their digital transformation roadmaps. In today’s landscape, now is the time for public sector organisations to step up and prioritise application modernisation and security enhancements, or otherwise run the risk of failure.

To find out more about the challenges facing the public sector, take a look at our full whitepaper (click here to request a copy), or get in touch with a Cloudhouse expert today.

Our 100% promise: run legacy apps or your money back

Back To Resources

Are your older apps keeping you awake at night? Do long-standing applications force you to keep older versions of Windows on your estate? Are you worried that these elements of your estate introduce security, compliance and reputational risks? Worrying about what to do when Extended Support Updates (ESU) come to an end? Why not put Cloudhouse to the test and see how we can help?

We’re so confident our software compatibility solution will work for you that we are offering a 100% promise to all new clients who purchase a license agreement with us: you will be able to run your older Windows app on the latest version of Windows or your money back.

We have delivered solutions for hundreds of enterprises and suppliers across multiple sectors all around the world, from retail to motoring, education to utilities, healthcare to government. Our solutions dramatically lower the time and cost of migration from any Windows platform to any Windows platform – and without the need to refactor, recode or upgrade.

Wherever you need your older app to work, we have a solution that will work for you. On premise. On the desktop. In the cloud.

Key benefits of the Cloudhouse approach:

  • A permanent fix: when you decouple apps from the underlying OS version, they are no longer at risk if the original provider ends ongoing support
  • Security and compliance: apps are protected from vulnerabilities in older OS and you can unlock the benefits of current OS versions
  • Reduced costs: big savings compared to refactoring, redeveloping or replacing – and, if you deploy on modern infrastructure, it will most likely run much faster
  • Flexibility: complex apps are supported, including those dependent on older components in old OS, such as previous versions of .Net or Java.
